8 Myths of Self Defence, Women Still Believe!

PEOPLE around me will help me .....

Nowadays people have become self-centered, nobody wants to interfere in other’s problems. You may presume that people around you will be supportive, but, don’t rely on them, it’s better to have strategies (back-up plans) if no one comes forward to help. Research shows most of the serious crimes take place in isolated areas , where getting help from other people is a slim chance.

#1

MYTH

I will just RUN AWAY .....

Running away from the attacker is a good idea and if there is an opportunity, go ahead, but, in most cases attackers grab the victim so firmly that coming out from his tight grip requires effective techniques. In some instances you might get caught in a confined place where just running away is not an option. Also think, what if you are injured, or if attacker is on a bike, hence, knowing back-up techniques to disable the attacker and then run is the best option.

#2

MYTH

I am NICE with everyone, so no will attack me …..

This is the most common misconception. Being nice can be a good quality, but, definitely no guarantee that nobody will attack you. The fact is that you are nice, but, all people are not nice out there. Politeness is often mistaken as weakness. Criminals want easy targets, who are not going to make a scene or resist much. They certainly don’t want someone who will bash them up.

#3

MYTH

I will call POLICE help .....

Calling police is a good decision, but, before that just realize the facts that the average police response time is about 13.5 minutes, although the quickest time we can consider is 7 to 8 minutes, incase you were not taken to another location. So in short you have to fight-back and survive 7 to 13 minutes till police help arrives. We can’t depend much on the police because there are only 144 police officers for every 100,000 citizens (the commonly used measure of police strength). So training & preparing oneself is the best option in a fight against criminals.

#4

MYTH

I have my PEPPER SPRAY .....

Having a pepper spray will give you confidence but think if you can’t find Pepper Spray in your Purse the day when you’re in Danger!!! Just buying a pepper spray itself won’t protect you as you also need to learn to use it tactfully. As there are different types of pepper spray which have different throw / discharge mechanism, and intensity of the spray, you also need to keep air direction in mind while using it. Some cases, it has seen that people who are under influence of drug or alcohol, have more resistance, hence you also need to execute effective hand-blows, kicks etc., along with pepper spray use.

#5

MYTH

My HUSBAND, FATHER, BROTHERwill take care .....

Depending on father, husband, brothers is okay, but they won’t be accompanying you always and what if you’re alone that fateful day? Learning self defence means empowering oneself rather than depending on close family members . You need to empower and strengthen yourself to such an extent that you can defend yourself and incase, if the situation demands you can also protect your father, husband and brothers from a sudden violent situation

#6

MYTH

I will just SLAP him .....

Just slapping may work in a crowded place where you are handling a roadside Romeo, but not against a hard core criminal harassing you in an isolated area, where he may slap you harder in return. During such violent circumstances just slapping won’t be effective; you need to hit the attacker’s most vital areas accurately to escape or run away.

#7

MYTH

I need to spend 5 TO 10 YEARS to learn defend myself .....

You are right, if you want to learn traditional martial arts, yes, it will take more time, its a life time commitment to master a traditional martial art, to achieve a Blackbelt takes 4 to 5 years, whereas, learning Realistic Self defence doesn’t require 5 to 10 years as a criminal won’t respect your Blackbelt, you can learn Realistic Self defence in a few months and need to just practice those techniques which you feel are easy to understand, simple to learn and effective to apply on a criminal out there to rip you apart. You don’t need to achieve a Black  Belt rank to defend yourself.
